I’m Martyn Coupland, a technology leader, software architect and engineer with a passion for cloud technology, software innovation and helping organisations get more value from technology.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked across software engineering, enterprise architecture, cloud platforms and technology leadership. I’ve seen first-hand how the right technology decisions can transform businesses, enable people and create opportunities — and how the wrong ones can introduce unnecessary complexity.
This blog is where I share some of those experiences.
Technology moves quickly. New platforms, frameworks, architectural patterns and ideas emerge constantly. But understanding how something works and knowing when, why and how to use it are two very different things.
Through Notes from the Field, I explore the practical realities of designing, building and operating modern technology solutions.
You’ll find articles covering areas including:
I’m a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) in .NET and Azure Integration Platform as a Service, and a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT).
My experience spans software development, cloud architecture, enterprise technology strategy and engineering leadership. I’ve also had the opportunity to share knowledge through conferences, community events, mentoring and technical training.
I believe the technology community is strongest when people share what they’ve learned, including the things that didn’t quite go to plan.
I’m not interested in publishing another collection of tutorials that simply repeat the documentation.
I want to explore the why behind technology decisions, share practical approaches, challenge established thinking and discuss what works in real-world environments.
Some posts will be deeply technical. Others will take a broader architectural or strategic perspective. All will aim to be useful, grounded in reality and focused on delivering meaningful outcomes.
Whether you’re an architect designing your next platform, an engineer exploring a new technology, or a technology leader thinking about what’s next, I hope you’ll find something useful here.
Thanks for reading.
